20 best-selling SUVs, MPVs in FY2025 first half
The top 5 list comprises two Marutis, one Tata, one Mahindra, and one Hyundai.
Wholesale of utility vehicles reached 1,343,363 units, showing a 12.2 percent increase compared to the previous year (H1 FY2023: 1,186,953 units). This surge resulted in 156,410 more UVs being shipped between April and September 2024 than in the same period last year. Furthermore, the remarkable performance boosted the UV segment’s share of total PV sales to a record high of 64 percent, up from 57 percent in H1 FY2024. With a diverse range of over 110 SUVs and MPVs, along with an impressive 800-plus variants, the market witnessed a highly competitive landscape. The unveiling of the top 20 best-selling models for H1 FY2025 sheds light on the models that are truly making an impact in this dynamic market. Let’s delve into an in-depth analysis of the top 20 models from the first half of the year.
- Leading the pack is the Tata Punch, closely pursued by the Hyundai Creta and Maruti Ertiga.
- The Mahindra Scorpio has climbed up one spot in the rankings from last year.
- Sales of Nexon, Venue, and Grand Vitara experienced a decrease in comparison to the previous year.
Between April and September 2024, the top 20 models collectively accounted for 1,174,122 units in wholesale, making up a staggering 87% of the total 1.34 million utility vehicles sold during that period. According to data gathered from SIAM and company reports, the Tata Punch, ranking third for the fiscal year 2024, leads the pack with 101,820 units sold. Offered in petrol, diesel, CNG, and electric variants, the Punch has shown robust year-on-year growth of 40%, reaching 72,626 units in the first half of fiscal year 2024.
Among the leading models trailing closely behind Punch’s sales figures are three other contenders – the Hyundai Creta with 96,416 units, followed by the Maruti Ertiga with 95,061 units, and the Maruti Brezza with 93,659 units. Notably, the Creta, a dominant force in India’s midsize SUV segment and the fourth highest-selling UV in FY2024, has now claimed the second spot with 96,416 units, marking a 15 percent year-on-year increase (compared to 83,693 units in H1 FY2024). This surge in sales can be attributed to the successful launch of the new Creta in January 2024. Meanwhile, the ever-popular Ertiga MPV, ranked fifth in FY2024, has ascended to the third position on the podium due to its exceptional performance, boasting a significant 47 percent year-on-year growth (compared to 64,677 units in H1 FY2024).
In the realm of compact SUVs, the iconic Maruti Brezza, a pioneer that ignited the trend years ago, has secured the 4th position by selling 93,659 units, marking a 14 percent increase compared to the previous year (amounting to 81,928 units in H1 FY2024). However, it has slipped from its 2nd position in the overall rankings for FY2024. On the other hand, the Mahindra Scorpio has climbed one spot to claim the 5th spot in H1 FY2025, registering sales of 81,293 units which signifies a notable 36 percent YoY growth compared to H1 FY2024 figures of 59,849 units.
The Maruti Fronx, holding the sixth position in the rankings, has seen a 16 percent year-over-year increase with 73,841 units sold (compared to 63,477 units in H1 FY2024). In September of the current year, the Fronx marked a milestone by becoming the second Nexa SUV to reach 2 lakh sales, following the Grand Vitara. In the FY2024 rankings, the Fronx secured the seventh spot.
UVs numbered 7, 8, and 9 are currently experiencing a year-on-year decrease in sales. Despite being India’s top-selling SUV for three consecutive fiscal years – FY2024, FY2023, and FY2022, the Tata Nexon has slipped six positions to settle at number 7. Clocking in an estimated 72,350 units in the first half of FY2025, the Nexon has witnessed an 8 percent decline compared to the 78,975 units dispatched during the same period last year. The introduction of the Nexon CNG and the Nexon ICE variant, which achieved a commendable 5-star safety rating in the Bharat NCAP crash test, is anticipated to revitalize the Nexon’s market presence. Outperforming its sibling, the Punch, since January 2024, the Nexon celebrated its seventh anniversary in September 2024 with over 700,000 units sold since its launch.
Despite experiencing an 11 percent year-over-year decrease in sales to 56,521 units, the Hyundai Venue, Korean automaker’s inaugural compact SUV, continues to maintain its eighth position in FY2024.
It appears that there has been a slight slowdown in the demand for the Maruti Grand Vitara, with 55,751 units sold, marking a 6 percent decrease compared to the previous year. Despite this, the Grand Vitara, which is the highest-selling Nexa SUV with over 2.17 lakh units sold since its launch, continues to hold the 9th position in the first half of 2025.
The demand for the compact SUV Kia Sonet has surged significantly by 41 percent year-on-year, with 55,017 units sold, securing its 10th position in the rankings. The introduction of a new model has evidently fueled this growth, surpassing the sales figures of the first half of the fiscal year 2024, which stood at 39,066 units.
50 percent of the Top 20 UVs are dominated by compact SUVs.
