When Dilip Kumar Broke THIS Promise to Wife Saira Banu by Marrying Asma: ‘At the Time of My Nikah…’
Saira Banu and Dilip Kumar had been married for 16 years when the media broke the story of his wedding to Asma.
Dilip Kumar and Saira Banu reshaped the idea of love in Bollywood with their unique bond. Despite a significant 22-year age gap, the couple remained deeply committed to each other. Saira made the decision to step away from her acting career in Bollywood to prioritize their marriage. Despite their strong connection, there was a challenging phase in their relationship. In his autobiography “The Substance And The Shadow,” Dilip Kumar revealed a short-lived marriage to Asma Rehman, 16 years after marrying Saira Banu.
He disclosed in his book that Saira learned about the marriage from news reports and was deeply wounded. Dilip had explicitly vowed not to marry again after marrying Saira. Recalling the events of 1982 when news of his marriage to Asma broke and Saira came across the shocking revelation in a tabloid, Dilip expressed his anguish at needing to comfort her, given her unwavering trust and unconditional love for him. This account was reported by Rediff, citing his book.
He recounted how, being away from home, Saira and her mother Naseem Aapa came across some news that they found hard to believe due to their unwavering trust in him. This trust stemmed from the solemn promise he made during his marriage to Saira, assuring them that a second marriage was out of the question and should not even be a topic of discussion.
He expressed deep remorse for the pain he inflicted on Saira and the betrayal of her trust, acknowledging her unwavering support despite his mistakes. Despite the difficult circumstances where a woman might naturally turn away from her partner, Saira chose to stand by him as he sought to rectify his errors through legal means and rebuild their sixteen-year marriage. Seeking time to resolve the situation, he appealed to Saira for patience and understanding. Notwithstanding the damage to her pride and trust, Saira remained steadfast at the counsel of Naseem Aapa and her brother Sultan Ahmed.
Dilip promptly reaffirmed his commitment to Saira by ‘formalizing a pledge through a commitment letter well in advance of commencing and concluding the divorce proceedings with Asma. Several of my intimate acquaintances attested to this.’ He disclosed that individuals such as Rajni Patel, along with his wife Bakul Patel, Sharad Pawar, and Mama Kapadia, provided steadfast support during the challenging period.
Dilip and Saira stayed together in marriage until the esteemed actor’s demise on the 7th of July, 2021.
