Hamas to be led by Doha-based committee, no chief to succeed Yahya Sinwar: Report
Yahya Sinwar took over as the leader of Hamas in Gaza in 2017, succeeding Ismail Haniyeh following the assassination of the latter, who headed Hamas’s political wing based in Doha, in July of that same year.
In Short
- A committee has been established to make strategic decisions concerning the Israel-Hamas conflict.
- Representatives are included for Gaza, the West Bank, and Palestinians living abroad.
- The Hamas leadership refrains from naming Sinwar’s replacement until the 2025 elections.
Sources have disclosed that a media report indicated a shift in leadership within the Palestinian militant group Hamas, with a five-member committee in Doha established in August after the assassination of former political chief Ismail Haniyeh set to assume control.
Instead of selecting a sole leader to replace the late Yahya Sinwar, Hamas opted to establish a committee for the succession process following his demise at the hands of Israeli forces in Gaza, as confirmed by a source to AFP.
