Star Health and Allied Insurance, one of India’s prominent standalone health insurers, has revealed a significant nationwide initiative ahead of World Osteoporosis Day, which falls on October 20. The campaign is designed to boost awareness about osteoporosis, particularly targeting women, who constitute a considerable 69% of reported osteoporosis cases in the country. The primary goal of this year’s campaign is to inform the public about the condition, promote early identification, and advocate preventive actions.

Star Health is set to provide complimentary bone scans across 46 cities in India, such as Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Bangalore, on October 19, 2024, as a key component of its upcoming campaign. Alongside these scans, informative sessions will also be conducted.

At wellness retreats, participants can expect to gain insights on nutrition, engage in consultations with medical experts, and acquire information on osteoporosis prevention and treatment.

Mr. Anand Roy, the MD & CEO of Star Health Insurance, has stressed the company’s dedication to promoting preventive healthcare. He highlighted that osteoporosis is a prevalent bone disease, impacting 1 out of 3 women and 1 out of 5 men aged over 50. The primary objective of this campaign is to equip individuals with the means to detect the condition early and encourage them to proactively manage their bone health. Through initiatives such as providing complimentary bone scans and organizing awareness events nationwide, the aim is to mitigate the lasting effects of osteoporosis and enhance the well-being of individuals susceptible to the condition. This endeavor aligns with Star Health’s broader wellness strategy centered on preventive healthcare and fostering a healthier India.

India’s Increasing Worries Regarding Osteoporosis

Undoubtedly, osteoporosis, a silent underminer of bone strength that heightens the susceptibility to fractures, frequently eludes detection and proper management, particularly in the female population. The hormonal shifts that come with aging place women at a heightened vulnerability, with the ailment often lurking unnoticed until a bone fracture manifests. Such occurrences can severely diminish one’s quality of life, potentially culminating in prolonged incapacitation or, in severe cases, fatality.

Between Fiscal Year 2015 and the first half of Fiscal Year 2025, Star Health has reviewed 1,566 claims related to osteoporosis, predominantly from women. These numbers underscore the urgent call for heightened public consciousness and proactive steps, particularly for women who bear the brunt of this issue. Osteoporosis often remains undetected until bones reach a critical fragility, making even minor accidents likely to cause fractures.

Osteoporosis is a silent condition that can result in weakened bones and a higher susceptibility to fractures. It often goes undetected and untreated, posing a significant risk to individuals. While women are primarily affected due to age-related hormonal changes, men are increasingly susceptible as well. In India, the incidence of osteoporosis is on the rise, especially among post-menopausal women, making it a significant health concern.
