Amid ruckus, Jammu and Kashmir Assembly passes resolution for restoration of special status
A resolution was approved by the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly on Wednesday, urging the Government of India to engage in discussions with the region’s elected officials to devise constitutional frameworks for reinstating its special status. Despite opposition from the BJP, the call for restoring these provisions was emphasized during the session.
The Assembly resolution emphasized the significance of the special status and constitutional safeguards that protected the identity, culture, and rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. It also raised apprehensions regarding their unilateral revocation.
The statement also emphasized the importance of ensuring that any restoration process protects the unity of the nation and respects the genuine desires of the Jammu and Kashmir populace.
During Wednesday’s House session, Surinder Choudhary, a National Conference legislator and Deputy Chief Minister, put forward the resolution. The opposition leader from the BJP, Sunil Sharma, contested it, arguing that it violated the rules and was not within the scope of the House proceedings.
Amid the chaos in the House, BJP lawmakers vociferously objected to the resolution while every other member, disregarding party affiliations except for the Congress, stood in favor of it. The Jammu and Kashmir Congress head, Tariq Karra, and the leader Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed maintained a discreet silence throughout the commotion.
Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather issued a warning to put the resolution to vote as BJP members obstructed a discussion on it. Amid protests from BJP members, both sides chanted slogans both in support and opposition of the resolution.
